Border-day plan

How the day usually goes

Confirm documents first, leave early, complete the exit, enter and leave Laos, then come back in on your new Vietnam e-visa.

Same-day trip

Da Nang / Hoi An → Lao Bao → back

Early start, back in the evening.

  1. Pickup in Hoi An or Da Nang

Your car collects you from your home, hotel or an agreed meeting point. Hoi An pickups leave about 30–45 minutes earlier than Da Nang.

  2. Through the Hai Van tunnel to Hue and Dong Ha

The road goes north past Hue to Dong Ha, then west on Highway 9 into the hills. Our coordinator explains each step of the border procedure on WhatsApp while you travel.

  3. Arrive at Lao Bao and exit Vietnam

Queue at the Vietnam exit counter. As soon as you have your exit stamp, send us a clear photo of it so our team can follow your new Vietnam e-visa.

  4. Laos side at Dansavanh

Eligible passports get a Laos visa on arrival here (form, photo, fee in USD). Visa-exempt nationalities just get an entry stamp. You then complete the Laos exit formalities.

  5. Re-enter Vietnam

Show your new Vietnam e-visa (entry gate: Lao Bao) at the Vietnam entry counter. Before leaving the area, send us a photo of your new entry stamp so we can check it.

  6. Lunch and drive back

A lunch stop near the border, then the same road back south.

  7. Back in Da Nang or Hoi An

Drop-off at your home, hotel or meeting point.

Times are typical, not guaranteed. Traffic, border queues and e-visa approval times vary, and the order of steps can change on an officer's instruction. We confirm your exact pickup time when you book.

The route

From the coast to the Laos border

From Da Nang the road runs through the Hai Van tunnel to Hue and Dong Ha, then west along Highway 9 to Lao Bao: about 260 km, 5–6 hours each way. From Hoi An, add around 30 km.

  • Expats and digital nomads in Da Nang and Hoi An
  • English teachers waiting for a work permit or residence card
  • Tourists who want to stay longer in Central Vietnam
  • Anyone whose visa can’t be extended in-country

Before you go

What we confirm first

  • Your passport is valid for at least 6 more months, with 2 blank pages
  • Your current Vietnam visa or stay is still valid on the day you exit
  • Your nationality can get a Laos visa on arrival, or is visa-exempt
  • Your new Vietnam e-visa lists Lao Bao as the entry gate
  • You have clean, undamaged USD notes for the Laos visa

Avoid these

Route risks

  • Leaving the border area before your new Vietnam e-visa is approved and ready to use
  • Bringing torn or old USD notes, which the Lao counter may refuse
  • An e-visa that names a different entry gate, such as Da Nang airport
  • Starting late: the drive is long and the border day needs a buffer

Before you book

Important immigration considerations

We would rather you read this now than find out at the border.

Do you need a Laos visa? See the 15 nationalities that can enter Laos visa-free.

Crossing a border does not guarantee re-entry

Leaving Vietnam and coming back is a new entry. The border officer decides whether to admit you, every time. No trip organiser can promise that outcome, and we do not.

Visa validity and permitted stay are different things

A visa shows the period in which it can be used. The stay you are granted on entry is what you must not exceed. Check your entry stamp or e-visa details, not only the visa's end date.

Rules depend on your nationality and history

Laos visa-on-arrival eligibility, Vietnam e-visa eligibility, visa exemptions and past overstays all vary from person to person. Two travellers in the same car can face different requirements.

Your e-visa must name Lao Bao

A Vietnam e-visa lists the gate where you will enter. For this route it must be the Lao Bao land border. We check this with you before departure.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a visa run?

A visa run is a short trip out of Vietnam and back in, across a nearby land border, so that you can enter again on a new visa or visa-exempt stay. It is a normal international exit and a normal new entry. The border officer decides on entry each time.

Where do visa runs from Da Nang and Hoi An go?

To the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri, on the border with Laos (Dansavanh on the Lao side). It is the closest international land border to Da Nang, about 260 km away, and Lao Bao is on Vietnam's list of e-visa entry gates.

Can I do it in one day?

Yes. With an early pickup (around 04:00–05:00) most travellers are back in Da Nang or Hoi An in the evening. It is a long day: roughly 10–12 hours on the road plus time at the border.

Do I need a visa for Laos?

Most nationalities can get a Laos visa on arrival at Dansavanh, paid in USD. Citizens of ASEAN countries and a few others are visa-exempt. See the Laos exemption list, and tell us your nationality so we can confirm.

How much is the visa run, and what is the difference between shared and private car?

A seat in a shared car costs VND 800,000 per person, round trip. A private car costs VND 2,500,000 for a 4-seat car (up to 3 passengers) or VND 2,800,000 for a 7-seat car (up to 5 passengers), round trip. Both options pick you up and drop you off at your address in Da Nang or Hoi An, at the same price. Private gives you the whole car and more flexibility on timing. Transport prices don’t include the Vietnam e-visa (from VND 1,950,000) or the Laos visa-on-arrival fee.

Can you guarantee I will be allowed back into Vietnam?

No. Nobody outside the Vietnamese authorities can. We organise the trip, explain the procedure and check your paperwork with you, but the decision to admit you is made by the border officer.

Can I extend my visa instead of doing a visa run?

Sometimes. It depends on your visa type and whether an organisation can sponsor the extension. Many tourist e-visas cannot be extended in Vietnam, and then a visa run is the practical option. See e-visa and extension.
